Comparative genomics has proven a fruitful approach to acquire many functional and evolutionary insights into core cellular processes. Here it is argued that in order to perform accurate and interesting comparative genomics, one first and foremost has to be able to recognize, postulate, and revise different evolutionary scenarios. After all, these studies lack a simple protocol, due to different proteins having different evolutionary dynamics and demanding different approaches. The authors here discuss this challenge from a practical (what are the observations?) (...) and conceptual (how do these indicate a specific evolutionary scenario?) viewpoint, with the aim to guide investigators who want to analyze the evolution of their protein(s) of interest. By sharing how the authors draft, test, and update such a scenario and how it directs their investigations, the authors hope to illuminate how to execute molecular evolution studies and how to interpret them. The primary function of a book review is to articulate and present an understanding of the book's thesis and argument, and to make a judgment as to its value, so that readers will themselves understand and be guided by the understanding and judgment of the reviewer. Reviews are supposed to be interpretations created for the sake of a potential audience for a book. Unfortunately, most reviews fail to fulfill this function insofar as they merely paraphrase the text they are supposed (...) to interpret, fail to provide an understanding of it, or are so critical that they miss the significance of the book. A quantum theory of the photon is developed in a natural manner. Newton-Wigner and Wightman demonstrated that the photon could not be strictly localized according to natural criteria. These investigations involved the identification of an elementary system with a uirrep of the Poincare group. We identify a particle with the localized measurement of the states satisfying the uirrep. In the case of zero mass and unit spin, the photon is identified with those components of the state that can be localized. (...) A c-number four-vector potential and Lorentz condition are derived from the relativistic wave equation. The Wightman localization is demonstrated for the three independent space components of the vector potential, and the photon is identified with these components. A position operator and probability density follow immediately from the localization. A consequence of the subjective definition of a photon is that the transformations of the vector potential are unitary, and hence the unitary scalar product can be obtained for the four-vector potential. A Hilbert space is defined for the three space components of the vector potential. A position operator and probability density are derived from the scalar product, which compare directly with those obtained from the localization and the non-relativistic theory. As the longitudinal and scalar polarizations do not contribute to the measured transition probability, they are considered virtual. Lastly, a conserved four-vector current is derived from the scalar product. The possibility of observing a strict localization of the photon in the laboratory is suggested. (shrink)

Lachlan and Woodrow have completly classified the countable ultrahomogeneous graphs. We expand the language of graphs to include a new unary predicate. In this expanded language, ultrahomogeneous vertex 2-colorings of ultrahomogeneous graphs are classified.
